The 5th Festiladino (The International New Ladino Song Competition) is on its way

The International New Ladino Song Competition, sponsored by Yitzhak Navon, the fifth President of Israel and Chairman of the National Authority for Ladino Culture, will take place this year on Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at the Jerusalem Theatre.

The "Festiladino" competition was established to promote and distribute the writings of new ladino language creations.  Thanks to the festival, creators, singers and musical adapters from Israel and around the world gather together within a creative circle.  The competition raises public awareness of the magical culture of Ladino singing.  The last four Festiladino competitions held between 2003-2007 won wide acclaim.

This year the competition will be held on Wednesday, 31/12 at the Jerusalem Theater in the Henry Crown Hall and it will be filmed by Israeli television.

The songs competing this year are:

  1. "Longing" (El deskarinyo) by Maryam Raimond and Rivka Bar, performed by Chen Bar.
  2. "In This Heart" (En este korasón ) by Roberto Rodriguez, performed by Sarah Aroeste (USA)
  3. "First Love" (Primer amor) by Chaim Vitaly Sadaka (Canada), and Renata Sibal Yulak (Turkey), performed by Tzahi Siton and Noa Godel.
  4.  "Spanish Guitar" (Gitarra espanyola) by Margalit Matityahu and Betty Klein, performed by Raphael Ben Or.
  5. "The Gypsy Song" (La melodía jitana) by Haim Tzur, performed by Shira Kerner.
  6. "Haideh Haideh" (Ayde ayde) by Liliana Tarbas Alkalay (Italy), performed by Gila Bashari.
  7. "Declaration of Love" (Deklarasión de amor) by Yisashar Avzardel and Baldi Olier, performed by Judy Bachar.
  8. "Of the Best Taste" by Amalia Baruch and Matty Levi (Mexico City), performed by the Istanbul Childrens Choir "Stars of Istanbul" ("Las Estreyikas d`Estambol").
  9. "Kadia" (Kadia) by Avraham Yedidya, performed by Reut Rivka Shabi.
  10. "One You" (Uno Tú sos) by Hadar Ben Zion.

During the vote count, the audience will enjoy an artistic performance including updated versions of ancient festive songs by the singer-lyricist Moni Moreno Armoza and the performance of Baldi Olier and sons and the flamenco artist Tanya Vinocor with the festival orchestra.  At the end of the event, Mr. Yitzhak Navon, the fifth President of Israel and Chairman of the Ladino Authority, will give the winners trophies and awards.

The lyricist and singer Moni Moreno Armoza, a 23rd generation in Jerusalemite, will revive a medly of ancient festive songs in Ladino from the Cortejos (the shared yard in the Old City of Jerusalem).

The guitarist Baldi Olier composed one of the songs that is participating with the lyrics of the late Yisashar Avzardel - this song will be sung by the singer Judy Bachar (from Broadway all the way to the Champs D'Elysee).  Liliana Travas Alkalay from Italy – the winner of the first competition, wrote a new song which will be performed by Gila Bashari.  Other returning winners include the youth choir from Istanbul "Stars of Istanbul", orchestrated by the singer Izzet Bana from the Ladino choir "Fasharus Haspharadis".

"The fact that the participants in the contest are creators from different countries attests the to the intense desire to see Ladino as a living and revived language", says Yitzhak Navon, the fifth President of Israel and Chairman of the Ladino Culture Authority.  "The competition proves that the Ladino culture is not just a fond memory of the past, but a new creation which runs in the veins."

"Like the Eurovision, the Festiladino is a live song contest accompanied by a symphony orchestra", says Ronny Weiss, musical manager of the competition.  "The competing songs are on a high musical level.  The texts celebrate Ladino storytelling tradition, the melodies are catchy and warm and the style hints at Sephardic musical roots."

"We are happy to present an alternative to the New Year's Eve celebrations by reviving the ancient Ladino culture.  This is our calling and we hope that all ethnicities and traditions will come to discover and enjoy it", adds the founders and producers of the festival, Eli Matityahu and Mony Moreno Armoza.

The poet Matilda Koen Sarano, who's currently completing the first Hebrew-Ladino/ Ladino-Hebrew dictionary and is publishing a Jewish Sehpardic cookbook, will act as usual as a consultant for Ladino and its culture.  Shuki Wagner will be directing the performance.

During the fifth Festiladino, a special award will be bestowed upon Matilda Koen Sarano for her contribution to the preservation of the Ladino language.  Koen Sarano assists the International New Ladino Song Competition since 2003.
